Description:

The Center for Practice Innovations (CPI) sits within the Department of Mental Health Services and Policy Research at the New York State Psychiatric Institute, which is contiguous with the Department of Psychiatry of Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons. CPI carries out several important training functions for the New York State Office of Mental Health. The Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) Institute within CPI provides one of these training functions. Other training initiatives within CPI are responsible for training practitioners state-wide in the treatment of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders, on the Individual, Placement and Support model of supported employment, and on other evidenced-based practices for helping people with serious mental illnesses maximize recovery. The incumbent will serve as the Director of the ACT Institute and could lead one or more of the other initiatives promoting evidence-based practices.

The ACT Institute trains the staff of the 70+ ACT Teams statewide. Additionally, the CPI is charged with having its training efforts, including those under the ACT Institute, evolve and adapt to ongoing changes in the structure and financing of the mental health system. Emerging challenges include focusing on medical as well as mental health care needs and the need to develop innovative, collaborative strategies to engage particularly vulnerable individuals who have not been well served by traditional services in care.

The Director of the ACT Institute and these other initiatives is responsible for developing, coordinating, and implementing state-of-the-art training. The Director of the ACT Institute also oversees on-site consultation for the state’s ACT Teams and supervises the associated program staff. The Director will oversee the development, implementation, and revision of the training curriculum. As a senior Research Scientist, the incumbent will be expected to obtain outside funding for research on ACT or other OMH-related initiatives and to have a strong publication record in at least one of these areas.
